STANDARDS OF PRACTICE
Purpose: Definitive knowledge and standardized competencies necessary to perform the functions/procedures of a practitioner in the med-spa setting.
STANDARD I.
The practitioner demonstrates professional skills, knowledge and abilities consistent with recognized and accepted professional standards of practice.
Measurement Criteria
1. Current recommended protocols are described in writing, ie Standing Orders under
Medical Director or under physician’s direct or indirect supervision, per today’s current medical standard.
2 .Practitioners use/follow accepted and written orders as described above.
3. Practitioners demonstrate skill and knowledge with equipment, instruments and products per manufacturers recommendations, subject to Medical Director’s approval.
4. Infection Control Standards for the Med Spa Industry as developed are adopted and recommended for use by the Minnesota Association for Aesthetic Safety, for the express purpose of safety for patient/client and practitioner alike.
5. Under present responsibility of Physician direction or supervision, the practitioner is adaptable to changes in technology, procedural change or skill performance. This may require educational directives, skills demonstration and proficiency examination..
STANDARD II.
The med spa practitioner assesses medical status.
Measurement Criteria
1. Pre-treatment consultative appointment collects data, relevant health information is collected, indications and contra-indications for desired procedure is assessed and discussed with patient/client and medical director if needed. Physical assessment performed and referral for further care is also identified.

Pre-treatment Assessment, Treatment Parameters, Outcome and Post Treatment Care
Incident Reporting
Measurement Criteria
Consultation process ensures that patient/client expectations and perspectives are considered in planning and managed correctly per identified standing physician order. 1. The patient/client treatment goal / perspective is recognized and considered.
2. The treatment plan is developed and discussed, with informed consent being a major discussion and goal.
3. Relative discussion of treatment parameters and outcome strategy reinforced with written materials provided to patient/client, including information and aftercare directives. Appropriate care and treatment responses are known for all procedures. Identified priorities serve as focus of treatment plan, including options for care.
4. Consistent Infection Control guidelines are practiced within the med-spa, clinic or office and office policies/procedures that affect patient/client are discussed.
5. Incident Reporting- Patient concerns are addressed with Medical Director as soon as possible. Incident reports are discussed to ascertain adherence to protocol, Physician director monitors and collects safety data. Medical referral to other providers or transfer of any medical records is recorded and handled in confidential manner.
STANDARD IV
Practitioners provide relevant, accurate and current information enabling the patient/client to make decisions regarding chosen treatment or care plans. The model of
Informed Consent is in place.
Measurement Criteria
is read by patient/client and consented by signature prior to onset of treatment. Minors require parent or guardian signature.
STANDARD V
Professional Ethics define the basic tenets of moral obligation to patient/clients.
Measurement Criteria
Practitioners perform the professional services for which they are trained, licensed and supervised to provide.
STANDARD VI
Management of Facilities- Clinic administration determines responsibilities and obligations of business and practice management.
